Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Robert L. May (1905-1976) created Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 1939. He was working as a copywriter when his employer, the Montgomery Ward department stores, asked him to write a Christmas story that they could give away to customers. Drawing on The Ugly Duckling, he penned the story of a sweet, homely reindeer shunned because of his glowing red nose. Little did he know that his creation was destined to become an enduring classic.
