To help support struggling families eager to improve the fortunes of their children, We Give Books has joined forces with the Florida-based Volunteer USA Foundation, a Florida-based non-profit organization that advocates for education programs as the heart of how to improve families’ lives.

Through a variety of programs—many of which have reading and literacy at their core--Volunteer USA reaches out to local communities across the southeastern part of the US, through partnerships with other caring nonprofits, businesses, schools and volunteers, all in an effort to improve educational opportunities to families.

Mission

Volunteer USA’s Family Literacy Academies help thousands of moms and dads to learn English as a Second Language or to earn their GED while their child is also learning.

In communities across the South East, the program help parents who are migrant farm workers or who earn minimum-wage in the inner city, care-giver’s whose resources typically serve the entire family. At the same time, The Family Literacy Academies provide their children childcare and a nutritious meal so that these moms can attend classes where they can earn their high school diploma.

As a result, families in even the very poorest parts of the southern United States get a chance at building better lives for generations to come.

Impact

For parents and their children, participating in Volunteer USA’s Family Literacy Academies is life-changing: Ninety percent of parents improve at least one grade level each year, and almost half of them improve by two grade levels. Most importantly, while their kids come into the program very deficient in literacy skills, by the time they enroll in kindergarten they are on grade level with their peers.

Goal

This year, We Give Books will be providing more than 4,000 books to Volunteer USA, specifically to share with the parents and pre-schoolers served by their Family Literacy Academies.

Thanks to your efforts, parents and children who otherwise might not have them will have new books to read and share together.
