America's Children's Museum on Wheels: StoryBus
Read a free children's book online today and help provide books to children in Chicago's low-income neighborhoods.
America's Children's Museum on Wheels: StoryBus empowers teachers by encouraging them to develop their own curriculum, teaching to the whole child, utilizing a single classic story. It enables young students to have collaborative literary experiences that bring stories to life, so that they better understand the stories. As a result, children develop a lifelong love of reading. The goal of StoryBus is to imbue Pre-K and Kindergarten children in Chicago's low-income neighborhoods with a love of stories, so that their natural curiosity is peeked, and they become lifelong learners as a result.
Pre-K and Kindergarten teachers attend five 1/2-day institutes through this program, where they learn to develop their own Little Red Hen curriculum. Each teacher receives a sample curriculum, five different, multicultural "Red Hen" storybooks, and a "Red Hen" storytelling DVD. A professional storyteller performs "The Little Red Hen" at the school, then the StoryBus, a children's museum on wheels, brings the Red Hen exhibit to the school. A teacher-led family literacy workshop at the end of the StoryBus visit gets parents involved, too.
With your participation, We Give Books will provide 1,000 books to children in Chicago's low-income neighborhoods who truly need them.
