Harnessing the Power of Reading
At the age of fourteen, William Kamkwamba's desire to learn empowered him to pursue a dream: the teenager wanted to harness the power of the wind to produce electricity and bring lifesaving water to his drought-ravaged village in Malawi. Against all odds, that's exactly what he did.
William's story shows how - no matter how huge the challenge - education can empower anyone to become a hero and inspire others to follow.
Through your support, you can help other Malawian children seeking to follow in William's footsteps. For each book you read online, We Give Books will donate a physical book to one of the schools and libraries being built to support early childhood development through the nonprofit initiative inspired by William's work: Moving Windmills Project.
About The Moving Windmills Project:
Moving Windmills Project was founded in 2008 to pursue rural economic development and education projects in Malawi, Africa.
The Moving Windmills Project motto is "African Solutions to African Problems." Rather than invest in top-down, externally imposed agendas, Moving Windmills works with local leaders to determine, organize and implement the appropriate solutions. The organization supports Malawian-run rural economic development and education projects with the goals of attaining community economic independence and self-sustainability; food, clean water and health security; and educational success.
The Moving Windmills Project is inspired by the story of William Kamkwamba, a remarkable young man from a remote village north of Malawi's capital city. Forced to drop out of school due to lack of funds, William turned to self-education and, after seeing a picture of a windmill in a textbook, decided to build one to power his family's home.
