Primary Source is a non-profit organization that educates K-12 teachers about world histories, diverse cultures, and global issues. Through face-to-face and online graduate level courses and resources, we provide educators with the knowledge and tools they need to prepare students to thrive in today's world.

The mission of this We Give Books campaign is to provide teachers, students, and community members a way to learn about the world and to take action, reflecting the belief that global understanding is not only about building knowledge, but about taking steps to make the world a better place.

There are two parts to this special campaign:

Part 1: Read a Book. Give a Book.

Each time you read a free online children's book at We Give Books, your efforts will help give a new book to children in Asia. We Give Books and Primary Source have teamed up with the Asia Foundation for this special campaign. Its Books for Asia program puts one million new books and resources into the hands of students, educators, and community leaders each year. Click "Support This Campaign" to begin reading and help us reach our goal of 500 books.

Part 2: Read Girl in Translation with Primary Source

Continue your learning and join Primary Source for an online book discussion of Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok. Girl in Translation is the story of Kimberly Chang, a young girl who emigrates with her mother from Hong Kong to Brooklyn. As Kimberly navigates life from a Chinatown sweatshop to the Ivy League, the book explores themes of identity, race, family, adolescence, and immigration. It won a 2011 Alex Award as one of the 10 best adult books that appeal to teen audiences. It is appropriate for high school students and adults. Engage with this coming-of-age story through an online forum and a live, web-based discussion on Tuesday, December 1^st at 4:00 p.m. EST with author Jean Kwok and readers from around the world.
