United Through Reading, the nation’s first nonprofit to promote the read aloud experience for separated military families, offers deployed parents the opportunity to be video-recorded reading storybooks to their children, which creates positive emotional connections and cultivates a love of reading. United Through Reading recognizes the power of books and shared reading experiences to bring families together.

All too often, children who are separated from their parents face increased levels of anxiety. Having Mommy or Daddy “on demand” in the form of a United Through Reading DVD or video file is reassuring to children.

United Through Reading is also grounded in the belief that reading aloud with children is a powerful educational tool that nurtures the self-esteem of children, instills the joy of reading at an early age, and strengthens the bond children need with their families while preparing them for academic success. As such, it takes a preventative approach to the problem of illiteracy and emphasizes reading at an early age, and works with parents and caregivers as the most important adults to promote and instill reading habits.
