First Book Press Releases

WASHINGTON, July 20, 2015 – The nonprofit social enterprise First Book has been awarded its fourth consecutive four-star rating from America’s premier charity evaluator, Charity Navigator, putting First Book in the top eight percent of all charities evaluated. The four-star rating is the highest awarded by Charity Navigator for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency.

By applying strategies from the private sector, First Book works to resolve a fundamental social issue: equal access to literacy and educational opportunities for children in need. First Book fulfills its mission by providing books and educational resources to schools and programs serving children from low-income families across the U.S. and Canada. With over 180,000 registered educators and program leaders, and increasing by more than 150 additional registrants each day, First Book serves the largest and fastest growing network of schools and programs serving children in need.

Earning a fourth consecutive four-star rating indicates that First Book outperforms most other charities in America. The exceptional designation from Charity Navigator differentiates First Book from its peers as an organization that consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way and adheres to good governance and other best practices.

“First Book fulfills our mission to help kids read, learn and succeed in the most transparent and most impactful way possible,” said Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO of First Book. “We know the nonprofit sector is growing rapidly and donors want to contribute their hard-earned dollars to organizations they trust. We’re thrilled to be recognized by Charity Navigator for the fourth year in a row, and committed to upholding our promise of accountability, transparency and impact on behalf of our generous supporters, corporate partners and the children and educators we serve.”
